This charcoal is made from timber sourced from Natural England SSSI protected woodlands in Essex and Hertfordshire.

In the 19^th Century, with the massive increase in the population of London, charcoal was in demand for domestic heating and cooking and for the steam engines used in every facet of industry and much transportation. Hornbeam charcoal became known as Hertfordshire gold.

Charcoal from Hornbeam is still regarded as the best there is.
